Why are Aston Villa and Manchester United playing on Sunday?
The clash at Villa Park is one of three Premier League games being played at 2pm on Sunday while there is one at 12pm and the final game of the weekend at 4.30pm.

The other two matches are Southampton vs Newcastle and Crystal Palace’s trip to West Ham.

The games involving Manchester United, Arsenal and West Ham are being played on Sunday rather than Saturday because of each of the teams’ involvement in the Europa League and Europa Conference League.

When teams play on Thursday evenings, regardless of the competition, their following Premier League game will always be played either on the Sunday or the Monday night. Taking into account potential travel, recovery and preparation for the league game, it is deemed unreasonable to make teams play on a Thursday then on the following Saturday, a couple of days later.

In this case, the Villa trip has been moved because of Manchester United’s important Europa League game against Real Sociedad. United need to win by two or more goals in San Sebastian to leapfrog their Spanish opponents in Group E which would also mean the avoidance of a two-legged play-off against any of the teams dropping out of the Champions League.



So, why is Aston Villa vs Manchester United not on TV?
As the game is being played outside of the English football blackout period, plenty of supporters have asked why the game is not being shown on television. The simple explanation is that the match was not chosen to be shown by broadcasters but there are reasons why that is the case.

Firstly, every team has to be picked for at least six televised matches per season. That figure does not include the two full midweek game weeks that Amazon Prime have the rights to so those six games must be shown across Sky Sports and BT Sport.

If the broadcast companies had no guidelines, they would likely show the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal every weekend due to their huge UK fanbases but the rules have been implemented to ensure there is fair coverage across the league. That helps to explain why this particular match hasn’t been picked as Erik ten Hag’s will occupy plenty of other televised slots. For reference, both of Manchester United’s matches that precede and succeed their trip to face Aston Villa were selected in the 4.30pm Sunday afternoon slots.

Another explanation is that there are more attractive games from a broadcaster’s point of view this weekend. Tottenham vs Liverpool was the first pick, chosen by Sky Sports, while Arsenal vs Chelsea was the second pick, chosen by BT Sport. Although, as it happens, the game at Villa Park is a very intriguing one as it could be Unai Emery’s first game as Villa manager while United continue to trend in the right direction under Erik ten Hag. However, the decision to not televise it was made before Emery was appointed.
