Stephen Ireland looked tiny in comparison to Cottagers' midfielder Pape Bouba Diop, but the City boss is adamant that he will always take skill over size when picking his teams. A deft touch from Ireland lead to City's equaliser, and Pearce thinks that what his midfielder gained in experience at Craven Cottage outweighs any questions over his perceived lack of size. "It's been illustrated because he's played in midfield opposite Bouba Diop. That's the third match in a month where I have seen Fulham live, and to be fair he (Diop) looks like a man-mountain compared to anybody! laughs Pearce. "It could be a little bit misleading with Steve but his physique's irrelevant, it's his footballing ability that he's in the team for. "We pick a team on ability, not on size. With Steve it's the learning curve that's important, not the size of the individual." The Manager and his staff are using the break between Premiership fixtures to focus on how what happened against Fulham can be used to City's advantage against Blackburn Rovers, sure to be another tough encounter. "The fact is that if you have youngsters in key areas, it is going to be a steep learning curve for them. They were playing directly three against two in that central area as well, which was a problem for them, especially if you are not as experienced as the next man who may come in. Maybe Claudio would have coped with it in a different way. It's certainly something we are going to look at between now and Blackburn, but the beauty of it is that it was a fantastic way to learn." Ireland's pass to Croft prior to City's goal was a moment of sublime skill, and it compared well with the performance of Fulham's pocket battleship, Steed Malbranque. Pearce knows that he cannot coach moments like that, so he will concentrate on other matters when the squad reconvenes next week. "The things that go well, that come naturally to players, fine. You praise and encourage that, but I have to focus now on why we were beaten by Fulham. As long as we get to Blackburn and we are better as a team than at Fulham, then I'll have done my job for them, both as a collective and as individuals."
